Professor Simon Hooker Awarded IOP Medal

Group leader Professor Simon Hooker has been awarded the prestigious Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics “for pioneering contributions to the development of high-power plasma waveguides and their application to laser-driven plasma accelerators.”. His research has directly contributed to the record-breaking acceleration of electrons to energies exceeding 1 GeV in centimetre-long plasma stages, opening a path to applications of plasma-based accelerators in healthcare and industry. In his most recent work he has demonstrated how high-power laser pulses can be guided in all-optical waveguides, and how plasma wakefields can be driven by a train of laser pulses operating at multi-kilohertz repetition rates.
